Saturday, August 12, 2017 - Beach Day

We typically close our week by heading for a beach resort on Saturday morning that is close to the San Salvador airport (which is not in San Salvador, the capitol).   This is about a 3-hour drive from Ahuachapan, where we worked.  This allows us to catch an early flight Sunday morning to Dallas, then Indianapolis.  It gives us some time to rest and recover from the work week.

The beachside restaurant and bar, plus elevated massage room.

Another view of the beach area from across a small street, from the balcony of one of our rooms.  We had devotions Saturday night to this view.

Montano is the lifeguard on duty from dawn to dusk.  His red hat means he has completed 7 years of lifeguard training and internships.  We see him every year.  His son is currently 15 years old and began training last year.  He will not be a fully certified lifeguard until he is 21 years old.

Montano's green hat signifies that he has passed a special test for lifeguards that requires one to swim out to sea 11 miles, and return unassisted.  Very few earn the green hat.  Francis knows Montano from earlier visits as well.

Jason and Alex build a sand castle.  Jason has his own method of digging.

An estuary, where a river meets the sea, visible on Google Maps, is about a mile southeast down the beach.
The tide was rising, and seawater was flowing up the river.

The estuary is marked by a ledge about 10 feet high.

Sunset will be soon, as the tide comes in.

Francis and Lorraine walk back from the river.

People live in thatched huts along the sea.
They move inland for storms, and rebuild as needed.

A fishing boat rests on the sand.  The weather is warm, humid, and breezy.

Sunset on the beach as the Pacific tide comes in for the night.
