Photos for Wednesday, August 3 - Making Concrete

Begin making concrete by gathering a pile of 7 wheel barrows full of sand, 5 wheel barrows of rocks, and 4 bags of cement.  Mix dry, working in a circle and shoveling from the bottom up.

Under the direction of Francis, shape into a volcano and crater using the local landscape as a guide.  Put water in the crater to make a lake.

The Habitat construction supervisor pays a visit while we mix the water with the dry concrete.  Again, we work in a circle, shoveling from the bottom up.

The concrete is delivered by shovel or bucket to Juan and he buries the rebar in it, making sure no bubbles remain in the final mixture.

The result is filled, level trenches which will be ready for laying blocks on Thursday (we think).  The dogs are always hanging around.

Tyra's favorite puppy dog.

Jim Hack and Steve Becker from Kewaunee.  Steve was with us 2 years ago on the Cristo Rey Church build in Santa Ana.  He is back this year, but not with us.  His group is at a different site.

The work site of the Steve Becker group.  The hand-dug the dirt to allow large rocks to be put up for a retaining wall.  The home will be built where the dirt pile is, which was hauled up in buckets.  This is a really hard work site!  They will smash large rocks with sledge hammers to form smaller rocks for the retaining wall.  Ugh.

Jose, Julio, and Jason at the Steve Becker worksite, also in Ahuachapan.  All 3 worked on the Cristo Rey Church build in Santa Ana in 2014.
