Memories of El Salvador 2018 … by Bob Clark

Our mission teams have traveled to El Salvador for years.  If you’re one of those volunteers, or for that matter if you have talked to one, you know part of the story.  We help build houses, and learn that chispa is grout used to fill concrete blocks, pupusas are a staple at meal time, and there is a funny compaction tool made from a stick stuck in a coffee can filled with concrete.

Home construction, tools, material, and food are all important, but the real story of El Salvador is about building relationships.

The group with our Habitat home family: Carlos, Mervin (8), Yenifer, and Sofia (2).

Cement fittings used to hold the rebar in place in the foundation of the house.

A lasting memory I have from our recent trip wasn’t about house building at all.  It involved two grade schoolers named Jennifer & Justin who lived next door to our work site.  Like kids anywhere they were curious, wanted to be involved, and spent their after-school time with our team.  We had children’s books and beanie babies to share.  I have an image of Lisa Hack reading one of the Spanish language books to the kids.  Justin standing there wide eyed and Jennifer with the biggest smile you ever saw sitting on Lisa’s lap.  Never mind that Lisa did not really speak or read Spanish.  She did the best she could, and it was plenty good enough.

Jennifer, one of the neighbors next to the house build site.
Justin, another neighbor next to the house build site.

I’m convinced the kids will always remember the kind lady who traveled so far from home and took time to read them a story.  I know I’ll never forget the look on their faces as they relished the moment.  That and hundreds of similar interactions our team members have had over the years is what these mission trips are all about.  Think about making the trip next year. It may be the hardest job you ever loved and just possibly your life will never be the same.
